this project is all about atmospheres; the main idea is to represent the atmosphere of a movie through a display that includes light, color, sound, movement, touch and change of materiality.
the man who fell to earth
by nicolas roeg
1976
about an extraterrestrial who crash lands on Earth seeking a way to ship water to his planet, which is suffering from a severe drought.
concepts included in the display
warmth (light and color)
sound distortion
transparency
water
metallic
reflexes
rupture of organic forms
technology
the tempo
of the piece intensifies as the main character uncovers earthly things like sex, fashion, religion and alcohol
/ the organic shapes break because of the intervention of the metalized paper
/ shapes and shadows
/ transformation of the organic shapes
THE DISPLAY
the sound is going to be recorded live - just like the image.
the recorder is not just going to record the sound, but also amplify it with speakers; so that will make the sound be more immersive.
keep the water as the main item in the display, just like in the movie where water is the initial push to the narrative, as it is the main character's pursuit from the beginning
water is also what is going to give movement and have a change in its materiality.

ice -mixed with room temperature water if necessary- inside a balloon with a tiny hole on it. this is going to make the ice melt. the balloon is going to be hanging on the ceiling - so the water will fall as it melts.

behind that, there's going to be a container also cobered with foil.

the foil's surface is going to be uneven and partly cobered by water- so when the water falls, the sound is going to be different depending on the part of the container falls.
the light of the whole room is going to be pure red - exaggerating the movies' color.
the ballon is going to be partly cobered by foil - which will give the spacial/sci-fi look to the display; and its surface is going to have an uneven surface also with holes on it. that will make the water fall to different places.
/ light test
/ ice inside balloon
/ foil + water

/ ground surface with the red lights on
/ previous sketches
here's the final resoult of the display. it's the representation of a 70s sci-fi world through water movement, metallic textures and an analog synthesizer formed by an integrated circuit that gives you the electronic sound.
